LED technology was actually pioneered about 3 miles away from Yale in Southie by a company called Color Kinetics. Although the company could not manufacture a white LED, Kinetics was great with colors and very popular commercially.
In July of 2007, they were purchased by Philips for 688 million. The strategy was to further CKs LED technology and marry that with Philips worldwide distribution. Their commercial installations are awesome.

Lots of exciting movement on the LED front -- including locally. A local LED developer, LumenZ, was featured on boston.com in a list of top local innovators yesterday. Cree, another US company, recently launched their EcoSmart ceiling can fixture through Home Depot. It dims very low, has a far superior color balance to CF and a great price point. And giant multinationals like Philips are investing like crazy -- very interested to come into the store and check out this fixture.
