Buy This as an Alternative to That

Lets look at this Lynx grill...

It has 75,000 BTUs with weather resistant stainless steel, cast brass elements, a true sear element for quickly searing the outside of your meats, a smoker, a rotisserie and an infrared element for even cooking. In short, this is an extremely like-able grill.

Then again, it should be at around $7,000...

So how about a Weber Summit:

Not as big as the Lynx, but it still has 60,000 BTU, a 12,000BTU side burner, a rotisserie and smoker for $1859...

How about the Weber Genesis:

Its a solid grill with 42,000 BTUs at around $630. We assemble and deliver all our grills over $399 free of charge. Why?...You don't want to assemble these.

Pro Grills

Post number 900 of the Yale Blog...hard to believe on so many levels. Let's return to an earlier gilded era, and show you the features of a professional grill. Typically, these units will be available in 27, 30, 36, 41 and 53 inches wide.

The key to buying and enjoying a professional grill is the BTU output. A 36 inch version should have an output of 75,000 BTUs. More heat means better performance. Also, the construction should be a weather resistant stainless steel .

Some other features/options:

True-Sear element: A high powered infra-red element to quickly sear the meats
Smoker box: An accessory to place wood chips to add smokey flavor
Rotisserie: You know this one....For even cooking, there should be an element behind the rotisserie
Side burners: Side burners for cooking corn, etc...on most pro grills, they are fairly hot at 15,000 BTUs

The Street And I

Its grill season again (unless it rains). The grill business was pretty self explanatory. You buy a grill based on size, BTU output and whether you want side burners. Then the pro sear element (quickly charbroiling the meats, after all who has the time?) and smoker were introduced.

Then this happened:

You are looking at a 53 inch Viking grill, warming drawer, refrigerator, beer tap, garbage chute and side burners all enclosed in stainless. Hence the outside lifestyle was born...Now you can accomplish any type of cooking outside, which was formerly done in your kitchen.

Of course real estate values play a huge part, and hence the outside kitchen is on the decline. Jason Notte of The StreetThe Street asked me about this and was kind enough to include me in his article.

The other guy sounds better, doesn't he?

I will post my How To Buy Grills next week...

Win a $5,000 Lynx Grill

We have had this image on our site for about 1 week. Tomorrow we will randomly pick the winner. (Last chance to enter!)

The Grill

How to buy a grill (a little off season, I know):

1. Construction. Ideally you want stainless especially if you expose it to the elements. You also want decent burners, cast iron or brass preferably.

2. BTU Output: The Lynx pictured is 75,000 BTU, but anything over 35-40,000 should be fine.

3. Pro Sear: Fast element to sear meats quickly.

4. Rotisserie: Baste meats in their own natural juices.

5. Side burners: Great convenience feature and some of these burners are pro.

How to Buy....A Weber Grill

I see alot of people looking at this post from last year...so with updates:
Weber has three popular series of grills:

The Spirit is their basic series. There are two in this series. They both have 611 sq inches of cooking space. One has 26,000 BTUs and the EP-310 has 36,000 BTU for more heat and faster cooking:

Weber Spirit

The Genesis is our most popular and has 2 models and a choice of colors. The Genesis is more powerful at 42,000 BTU with a larger cooking area at 637 square inches than The Spirit. The difference in the two models is a 12,000 BTU side burner:

Genesis Spirit

The Summit is the best Weber grill. It is the most powerful grill at 60,000 BTU with 693 to 838 square inches of cooking area. The S-650 is the best seller in this series with a 12,000 BTU side burner. a 8,000 BTU smoker and a 10,000 infrared back burner for the rotisserie. The S-620 is larger at 838 square inches has the side burners but no rotisserie or smoker.

Hope this helps. Have a nice weekend.

How to....Buy a Pro Grill

Podcasting is the way....or so I thought. Poor Richie sounds like we are taping his confession before the execution, so I am actually writing a post.

The whole outside lifestyle movement has spawned a new upscale invention...The Pro Grill. The brands to consider are Viking, Lynx and DCS. Typically the sizes start at 27" with 54" being the largest. These products have all stainless construction which prevents weathering and heavy BTU output for cooking fast.

Features to consider

1. Side burners- 15,000 BTUs for cooking

2. Pro sear- The pro sear element cooks the outside faster leaving the inside juicy

3. Rotisserie- Kind of self explanatory, but look for the infra red in the back for even cooking

4. Smoker accessory for smokey flavor

Now lets watch poor Richie
